The Ninth Conference of the FARC, A Hope for Peace in Colombia

By: Hollman Lozano

While the central government, the media and analysts are concerned that the Ninth Conference the FARC was carried out with the physical presence of members of the general staff somewhere in Colombia, - which would imply a failure in the years of Democratic Security strategy implemented by Uribe government will, or was carried out through the Internet, there is a fact of fundamental importance for the country's political future has been overlooked, and there seems to be a shift in the intentions and political dynamics-armed guerrilla movement.
The Conferences of the FARC, are the highest decision-making that brings together the full Staff, the Secretariat, the leaders of the blocks, the fronts and mobile units to make decisions binding by the full spectrum of movement in social and economic policy. That is, is the body that determines the medium and long term course that will keep the insurgent organization.
The last of the conferences of the FARC, held in 1993, occurs in a political-military private good, which leads to a valuation of the military over the political. At that time, the FARC came to make one of the most daring attempts to participate openly in Colombian politics. Had created, under the direction of the commander Jacobo Arenas, the Patriotic Union political movement, whose members, to the misfortune of the country, were killed by blood and fire throughout the national territory. So that would become the Eighth Conference, as a result of the extermination of the Patriotic Union, for more emphasis on the military over the political, as most tables and popular support and peasant insurgent movement had built up over years and years of political work, were killed in a short period of time by paramilitary groups or "servants of the state." But the Ninth Conference
not seem to have been carried out by some strange desire to strengthen the current dynamics of the armed organization, but rather, by what is perceived by some members as the need to redirect, since even the highest levels of the FARC, have felt the consequences of some sort of indifference and abuse against civilians in different parts of the country who once were his political and military outposts.
Therefore, the fact that the conference according to various sources has been carried out again on the political emphasis, a change in the orientation of the guerrilla organization that can eventually create the conditions for a serious peace negotiation, with a government that is willing to assume the political cost of making changes to the economic and power structure that involves closing the chapter armed struggle in Colombia.

the hijab and soccer in Quebec

the last Sunday in February that this is just a Muslim girl called Asmahan (Azzy) Mansour Nepp resident of Ontario is prepared to play a football match in the city of Laval in Quebec, with ordinary tools to participate in the sports event, except for a hijab scarf with religious connotations that Muslim women cover their heads when the referee of the match - also Muslim- asked him to withdraw the jihab, regarded as dangerous to the safety of her and other players during the game.
Hearing this, the coach of this team Azzy withdrawal of the dispute sports grounds that they were violating the religious rights of the child, as the hijab was not a purely decorative piece but a religious attachment in any way a danger to her or other players. Acted in the same way other teams, which also refrained from participating in the tournament to show their support Azzy.
The following Monday, radio stations and newspapers in Quebec adjectives shone against the referee without realizing that this was just doing his job. He did not ask the girl to withdraw the hijab because it could not stand the distraction, seems obscene in the sports scene, or unnecessary from any possible point of view. The hijab and any object that could eventually pose a danger for wearing it or for the other players are not allowed at sporting events as the Football Association of Québec to whom it is signed by the referee in question. So when asked Azzy to take off the hijab was only doing his job, ensure that players comply with established rules at the time of sports event.
True, Asmahan, and any person has every right to wear the badges and / or religious elements to consider necessary, as these not only make part of their culture, but in this way are his personality and mediate their relationship with the world, but no less true that there are circumstances with agreed rules-like a football game known in advance which can accept, fight or try to change.
The problem is not the referee. Perhaps not even the decision of the Football Association not to allow Québec that kind of badges, the problem is to associate the event with a violation of religious rights of the child. The problem is more the lack of knowledge by the trainer and the smaller of the Quebec Soccer Association does not allow that kind of distinctive.
Why not bet on the possibility that only trying to protect the integrity of the other players and make efforts to change the rule, if not found sufficient evidence to support the attitude of the Football Association. The second, to justify the attitude of the referee in a bigoted view of the West who feel persecuted by the diversity and specific to Islam, is not considering that the referee is a Muslim too, but above all is to continue breaking the bridges that unite us more beyond religions and beliefs, is to get back to the diversity in the name of diversity. Shut ourselves off from others, to defend their otherness.
